The Sketch Project

I grew up drawing all the time. I was never happy unless I had my sketchbook and a pencil with me everywhere I went. In High School I started drawing people. Eventually I started drawing people inter-acting. I found that of all the things I enjoyed drawing, people were by far my favorite. In college I began oil painting a lot, and once again, people was my specialty.

Somehow it hadn’t occurred to me that if I enjoyed drawing portraits and human inter-action so much, that I could step into the world of wedding photography with the same enthusiasm and take a similar approach with a camera rather than a pencil. In my Junior year of college I began taking photography classes, at that point I dropped everything I had done with a pencil and paintbrush and pushed myself full force into that entirely new medium.

Here I am today, having not done this for at least a few years, with a sudden urge to once again take out my sketchbook that had been filed away and grab a pencil and draw.

Steve was the obvious subject. He’s clearly a lot better looking than my drawing 😉

I think it helps me grow as a photographer to do this once in a while. Drawing used to be my “job” when I was in high school and college, now its just nice to be able to draw for myself. As a side project purely for myself, I am going to try to do this at least once a week going forward using photos that we’ve taken. Stay tuned 🙂

On a side note, I have now lost over 70 lbs. I wish I had the guts to post a before photo, but its way too embarrassing. I am now working on cutting my body fat down to 14% by the beginning of next year 🙂

Btw, the above photo was taken by Steve using a flash composite method that we learned while attending Ryan Brenizer’s lecture earlier this month.
